JOY IN A JAR
Shannon Christensen Fabric Collection Cottage Joy - Joy in a Jar
The "Joy in a Jar" name came from Bev Vaughn. The Facebook Quilting Group is rocking the name game. Canning jars are a country classic that have been used for everything. Today they're being used for flowers, perfect for Joy in a Jar. Bev, I'll be sending you some of Joy in a Jar to try out.

There are several fabrics still to name, see the fabrics in this post. I'll announce a new name tomorrow. The whole collection is on pre-sale through Windham's Representatives. It'll be in stores around August. In the meantime, join our email list to be part of the journey.

Our newest fabric name came from Katrina Lloyd. Again, from over in the Facebook Quilting Group. This is a sweet little bee pattern and the name fits. Katrina, I'll be sending you some of Bee Sweet to try out.

FLOWER PRESS
Shannon Christensen Fabric Collection Cottage Joy Naming Game
We had about 100 responses over all our socials on the fabric naming. So many creative people! "Flower Press" came from Sherry Wentrcek Kell over in the Facebook Quilting Group. That group was on fire with their naming game. I appreciate your "Flower Press" name Sherry, it's so perfect! I'll be sending you some of Flower Press for you to try out.

Cottage Joy - Help Name That Fabric

4/6/2018

One of the easiest ways for a company to keep track of their fabric is to number it. My collection is no exception. But that's really not a lot of fun. So I think the fabrics need names and I'd like your help naming them. In the comments, put the number and the name you've come up with. It's said that creativity takes courage. Be brave, put it out there.

Merry Creative Christmas Cookies to You!

12/9/2017

One of our family traditions is to decorate gingerbread houses. Holidays often do that, make us take time out of what we're doing and add some fun. These aren't the gingerbread houses but some of our Christmas cookies. It's where we decorated the table more than cookies.

Christmas Kit

This is my college girl's first Christmas that she'll be gone most of the season. I wanted her to have a little of home so I made her a Christmas Kit. It has her very own, grown up decorations.  Inside the bag is a cute, pre-decorated tree and the hat box has other things to make the little apartment more Christmas-ey.

After Quilt Market

11/16/2017

Once you’re in the thick of Quilt Market, there are some things you can do to really make the most of it. Here are 5 things to do after you leave every night, and after you get home when it’s all said and done.

  • Every night enter in the contact information for the people you got business cards from. Doing it every night makes it much more manageable. Not only that, you will have a better chance of remembering who the people are and the conversation you had with them.
  • Document your experience with social media. Post some of those pictures or videos you took during the day! Share with others what you’ve been up to. Not everyone can make it to Quilt Market, so spread the love, and build your following.
Shannon's Studio Newsletter October 2017
We shared in our Newsletter. (Another reason to sign up on our email list!)
  • Connect with the people you met. Send a quick email to follow up on the visits you had while at market. Even if it is just to say thank you for their opinion, make that connection.
  • Write down your own list of do’s and don’ts for the next time. Write down what you’ve learned too, and save it for the next time you go.
  • Do what you committed to others to do. Now is the time to make good on your promises. If you told someone you’d check out their website, do it! If you told someone you’d send them a sample, follow-through. This can be hard once you get home and are playing catch up on your regular duties, but it’s important – and it’s worth it!

A few years ago I did a Compliment Kit for some family members as a little inspiration. It was a fun little digital kit that was downloaded over 10,000 times. Hopefully that added up to a lot  of compliments being given out. (Look for this kit in our Shop)

Here's a new kit - my 1000 Thanks Kit. It's an invitation to find 1000 things that you're thankful for. It also is a digital download and super easy to put together.

During Quilt Market - How to Make the Most of Your Time

11/16/2017

Quilt Market in Houston 2017 was such a great experience! It was also a HUGE experience. When you are at something that large, it is best to have a plan to get the biggest possible benefits with your limited time. Here’s a list to help you know what you should be doing during Quilt Market.
  • First spend some time wandering. Then break out your plan you made with the Windham app, suggested on our list of things you should do before Quilt Market. If you’re already at Quilt Market, take a few minutes to do this at least in part. Then you can finish your list tonight after you get back to your hotel.
  • Be rested! Sleep at night, which is hard if you came with a friend, but trust me, you need some sleep!
  • Don’t be afraid to ask people for their opinions. Quilt Market is filled with industry experts. You can cut through a lot of mistakes by asking. Also, this is a great way to start and have a real conversation, and not just a short introductory brief.
  • You’ll meet dozens of people, write something down. After you meet someone, write something down about the conversation/company/commitment to remember them by on their business card right away. Even right in front of them. No one minded when I did this.
  • Talk with other people besides exhibitors. Ask people where they’re from, what they do, how many years they’ve been coming to Market. Ask them if you can talk to them later about your ideas and then get their contact info/business card.
  • Be willing to approach people. You can even ask them for directions. Everyone there was so nice.
  • Take pictures and videos. You can use these just to remember your time there, and for your website and social media.

  • Don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep. Don’t get so caught up in the moment that you overextend your promises. If there’s a question about whether you may or may not do something for someone, let them know you’ll get back to them. That’s a promise you can keep. If you know you can’t/won’t keep that promise either, then don’t make it.
  • If it gets to be too much or too tiring, take a morning or afternoon off. We came late Sunday, spent some time over in the quilt show (which was like a huge quilt museum, absolutely amazing) and then took Sunday afternoon off. Taking that break was a needed boost to work hard and get things done on Monday.

  • Set up dinner or lunch with people you meet. Go out for ice cream or pie! Treat yo’ self.
  • Let serendipity happen. Some things you just can’t force, and you wouldn’t want to. They turn out amazing all by themselves.

Doing these things will help you make the most of your experience and time at Quilt Market, and we hope to see you there! To know which markets we’ll be at, subscribe to our email list or follow us on Facebook. We’d love to connect with you in person!

Before Quilt Market - How to Prepare

11/16/2017

So, you’re thinking about Quilt Market? How exciting! It is a fabulous experience. Sometimes before we go to events – large events, important events, new events – we’re not exactly sure what we’re getting into, and don’t know how to prepare. This blog post is to help you know what you can do before Quilt Market, so that when you get there, you can get the most out of your time.
  • Plan to stay all 3 days. There is so much to see at Quilt Market! So much to see, so many people to meet. There’s just no way to get it all done in 1 day. Especially if it is your first time, plan to stay all 3 days.
  • Have something to hand out to start the conversation – a business card, product, or cute handout. You’re going to be one of thousands of people there. Sometimes, the more people there are around us, the harder it can be to talk to them. Bring something that will help you start the conversation and keep in contact with people. Make sure that your contact information is on whatever you choose to bring.

  • Take someone with you. You’re going to see so many beautiful things, and it is so much more fun if you can “Oooo” and “Aaaah” with a friend!
  • Good walking shoes. You’re going to need them! Quilt Market is huge; there’s a lot of walking, and not a ton of places to sit down in the actual market.
  • Download the Windham app & make 2 lists. The 2 lists are must see and would like to see exhibitors. (You can star exhibitors in the Windham app.)
  • Bring a bag to carry business cards, catalogs, samples, etc.

  • Make appointments with people you want to connect with. You can (and should!) set appointments up with others who will be at Quilt Market. Many of the exhibitors have tables set aside just for that purpose.

  • Have a budget for buying products. There are so many great products there, and it is so nice to buy while you can see them. Plus, for many things, you’ll save on shipping.
Doing these things will help you make the most of your experience and time at Quilt Market, and we hope to see you there! To know which markets we’ll be at, subscribe to our email list or follow us on Facebook. We’d love to connect with you in person!
