StudioHouse • Stenciling the Floor with Royal Design Studio Stencil

Guess what I started today? Stenciling the StudioHouse Classroom floor. Finally. I say finally because I've been putting off this project (on purpose and not) for many months now. First, I didn't know what stencil I wanted to use and figured I was going to make one myself. Then I thought better of it. So it took awhile to find one that I really liked and didn't cost too much. I went with Royal Design's Large Sultan Swirl Wall Stencil. It's a new stencil for them and I think it's lovely.

I was random about where I started. Too random. Wish I would have thought out the edges better. But I didn't. I was just anxious to finally start. I'll figure out the border later.

This is how far I got. I've also never stenciled a floor before. If I had any sense I'd have made my first project a small one. But, noooooooo. I didn't really have time to finish today but I started anyway.

This is right at an entry so I made the paint thicker than usual. It oozed a little and wasn't as clean as I'd like but it still looks good. Most people aren't going to notice and I've gotten past the idea of perfection. I still have tons of floor left to do but I'm pleased with the start.

What products and procedures did you use?
Was the floor sanded and raw?

Hi Angela. I’m glad you like the floor. The floor is about 100 years old and has had a lot of wear. But it was sanded and raw. Stenciled with one coat of a box store bright white. With 2-3 coats of polyurethane over the top. It has yellowed since because of the polyurethane which was expected.

I had a pro floor friend say that he’d prep the floor first with a finisher then stencil and put a top coat. But I’d already started the stenciling so it was too late. The floor has held up well and I’d do this again.

If you do a floor project post a photo with the hashtag #shareitwithshannon I’d love to see it. Good luck!
